La Jolla is along the coast in San Diego County, California. Too many visitors to San Diego make the mistake of simply driving through to catch a glimpse of their views. Not stopping to experience any of the unique activities they have to offer would be a detriment to any vacation. So take note as we walk through the top activities to do in La Jolla, so you don’t miss out either.

1. Explore Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave

Of La Jolla’s seven sea caves, Sunny Jim’s cave is the only one you can walk right into. To get to access the cave you will need to go into the historical landmark, the Cave Store. This cave opening has been protected and open to the public for over 100 years now.

The naming of this cave was done by none other than Frank Baum, the author of The Wizard of Oz. He gave it this name because of the shape of the cave’s opening. When you look out from the inside of the cave opening, the silhouette resembles a character from a 1920’s cereal box.

It is a one-of-kind experience to enter the Cave Store and descend the narrow passage of steps down into the sea cave. From the path within the sea cave you have an astonishing view of the cave itself and out into the waters beyond. Enjoy the sound of waves crashing into the cave and the subsequent echos all around you.

2. Kayak La Jolla Cove

Continue exploring more of La Jolla’s sea caves, but this time via kayak. The milder surf conditions and exciting coastline to explore in this area makes this a very popular activity. Not only can you explore the sea caves, but during the Winter/Spring months you can spot Gray Whales too.

You’ll want to hire a kayak guide to safely take you beyond the shore’s edge for optimal whale watching opportunities. This is another level of whale watching that make this an incredible adventure you don’t want to miss out on.

3. Snorkel La Jolla Underwater Park

While we’re talking about the adventures on the coast of La Jolla, we need to talk about the snorkeling. Explore the sea caves and underwater cliffs unique to this shoreline. Another popular stop is the sea lion rookery, located within the Underwater Park, where sea lions live and raise their babies. The best way to describe this sea lion snorkeling experience is like going to an under water dog park.

You’ll also likely be able to see the state fish, the Garibaldi, as well as many other fish, anemone, octopus, sea turtles, and more. One of the biggest stars of the La Jolla shore however, is the harmless (and skittish) Leopard Shark. La Jolla is home to the largest congregation of Leopard Sharks. The best time to get to snorkel with them is the latter half of the year, and the prime time is late Summer.

Due to the dangers of currents and tides, we always recommend taking a snorkel tour. The snorkel guide will not only keep you safe, but will know the best spots that day to spot local sea life.

4. Visit Birch Aquarium

If you are hoping to stay dry on your trip to La Jolla, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps is the perfect activity for you. The aquarium is perched on top of a hill overlooking the ocean, and inside it gives you a sneak peak of what’s below the ocean’s surface. The two story tall kelp forest with native species of fish and sealife makes you feel like you’re scuba diving. You’ll also find sea turtle, octopus and other fun exhibits. Outside is a touch pool where you can make friends with sharks, sea stars, and other sea creatures.

The Birch Aquarium is an immersive experience that gives you another perspective of the local sea life.

5. Cruise the Coast

La Jolla is one of the most scenic cities in the world to drive through. But it’s even better to make pit stops to take a stroll along the way to truly soak it all in.

The La Jolla Shores Park, which includes the local beach and Scripps Pier is a perfect area to stop and stretch your legs. You will also want to stop by the famous La Jolla Coves for a view of the seven sea caves.

If you want to marvel at architecture, stop by the local Church of Latter Day Saints that is reminiscent of a fairytale castle. This extravagant church can also be seen from the 5 freeway, which always catches the eyes of passerbys. To see the city from above, the best view is had by driving to the top of the nearby Mt. Soledad.

For a complete and once-in-a-lifetime experience cruising the coast of La Jolla, this tour by sidecar should do the trick:
